According to TikToker Hillary (@speckledhearts), it is common practice for people in the Hamptons to abandon their dogs there once the summer ends. This has been happening for years.
"People come out here and bring their dog, or they get a dog, or they adopt a dog, and it's fun to have the dog on the beach," said Hillary.
"Then, you find dogs wandering around on the beach, in the villages when the summer is over. It is gross."
A couple of days ago, Hillary was driving when she saw a large white poodle tied up on a short leash in the midday sun in front of a shop.
The dog was also standing on cement. Of course, Hillary was concerned. She did not initially think that the dog had been abandoned. She just assumed the owner of the dog was inside the shop.
She believed the dog would probably be gone once she came back from running her errand. However, it was still tied up when she returned.
Hillary was torn about what to do. She drove away, but immediately circled back and rolled her window down to address a nearby traffic cop.
She let the cop know that a dog was tied up in front of what appeared to be an abandoned store. Then, she got a bowl, filled it with cold water, and brought it to the dog. The cop asked around about the dog at the neighboring shops, but no one claimed it.
Out of nowhere, a woman wearing a big sun hat strutted down the street toward them. She started untying the dog and looked at Hillary and the cop out of the corner of her eye as if questioning why they were there.

Hillary explained that she was giving the dog some cold water because it had been outside for a while.
The woman flipped out and insisted that she had only been gone for a short time. She began screaming at Hillary for insinuating that she didn't take care of her dog and bragged that she had just spent $1,000 to get her dog groomed.
Hillary was simply trying to express her concern, but this woman wouldn't hear any of it. Just like most entitled, wealthy people in the Hamptons, she stormed off with a huff of arrogance, dragging the dog along with her.
In the comments section, many TikTok users were outraged by the fact that people abandon their animals so casually.
"Bottom line, she was mad she got caught leaving her property like that (not a loved pet, obviously); vanity prevents her ability to handle being seen in a negative spotlight. Thank you for taking the time to seek help and provide water," pointed out one user.
"I visited Montauk two weeks ago for the first time and was so confused to see a sign by the lighthouse regarding abandoning pets. Now, I understand why," wrote another.
"Same sort of thing in Alaska. Everyone wants sled dogs, but then realizes how much work they require and abandons them at the local shelter. The shelters are overflowing with huskies," added a third.
