This man and his wife just purchased their very first home. His mother-in-law will be beginning a new job shortly near his new zip code, and she made an interesting request. Well, actually, it wasn't one at all, since she didn't bother asking.

His mother-in-law wants to drop by and use his house to have lunch Monday through Friday while she's on her break and while he and his wife are not there.

"I don’t have anything against my MIL, but the idea of her regularly being in our house when we’re not there makes me uncomfortable. It just feels like an invasion of my personal space," he explained.

"Am I being unreasonable? I’m willing to be flexible, but her using the house as her lunch space 5 days a week just makes me uncomfortable.

"She also didn’t ever ask and has only said a few times, 'I’m excited to be able to eat lunch here when you guys are at work.' Which also irked me because she’s not even considering how we might not want this."

His mother-in-law has promised not to have lunch at his house if he and his wife have days off throughout the week, but he has an unpredictable schedule, so he would hate to be in a position where he has to inform his mother-in-law that she's not allowed to stop by because he's at home that day.

I find it invasive and strange that his mother-in-law thinks it's acceptable for her to come over to his house to have lunch when he and his wife are not around.

It also rubs me the wrong way that his mother-in-law didn't bother asking; this is something she's expecting or acting like she's entitled to.

This makes it seem like she wants to have that free time outside of the office to snoop through their things or something along those lines. It makes me uncomfortable, and this isn't even my mother-in-law!

He should absolutely tell her no; she can't turn his house into her breakroom, and he shouldn't give her a key, either.

What advice do you have for him?
