Dating can definitely be an investment for men, especially if they always insist on paying when they take women out. But if you spent $10,000 on first dates and still couldn't find love, would you be ready to give up?
This 29-year-old man is a gym-goer, and he's fit. He has a great job, making more than $200,000; he has a nice sense of style; he's charismatic; and he enjoys a bunch of hobbies.
He spends a lot of time in Manhattan, and in the last year and a half, he's been trying to find the perfect girl for him, but it has not been going well at all.
"I’ve matched with 700 people on Hinge and have been on dozens of dates. I have spent at least $10,000 on dating (I almost never let the woman pay)," he explained.
"I go out on average every other weekend at popular bars and restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn and have gotten dozens of numbers, none of which ever resulted in a date."
He's wound up in three exclusive relationships, which the girls all ended around the three-month mark. In every single instance, these girls returned from vacations to Europe and Miami and said they were done with him.
He felt blindsided and assumed two of the three girls cheated on him while they were gone. These girls had a lot of chemistry with him; their conversations were great, and he met their friends.
Aside from all of that, he's been catfished five times, so now he asks to FaceTime prior to first dates. So many profiles he's come across on dating apps have been edited with AI, and the girls don't look like their photos at all.
"Most recently (this one is bizarre), I hit it off with someone, and we’ve been calling/FaceTiming every day leading up to our first date," he added.

"I was excited, as it was some real organic chemistry before a first date in a long time, and she was the one initiating all the communication. I liked that, and it’s rare."
Halfway through their chat, as they were planning their date, she paused the camera and then hung up as he was in the middle of speaking.
From there, she ghosted him. He tried to call her back and even texted, but he got no reply from her. It goes without saying that the date never ended up happening after how the call went.
"IDK if it’s just NYC or this generation or what it is, but I cannot for the life of me properly date a real person. I am at the point where I am just going to focus on work and travel and ignore dating completely," he continued.
He feels disappointed and upset about modern dating.
Well, a lot of people are looking to ladder climb in New York City, and I can say that as someone who used to be single there. I suspect he's running into a lot of that.
He can at least cut down on his expenses by only taking women out for coffee on a first date instead of dinner, as that's just unnecessary and will weed some of the girls out.
It could be that he's not filtering out shallow women well enough. I do believe he should take a break and a breather, then try again by being more intentional about trying to weed vapid women out.
What advice do you have for him?
