If you're bestowed with the honor of being the Best Man or Maid of Honor at a wedding, do you think the wedding speech is an appropriate time for you to bring up the bride or groom's romantic history?
Three weeks ago, this man got married, and his wedding was perfect, up until his Best Man got up to give a speech during dinner. His Best Man was his best friend of 12 years, Dave.
Dave is truly awful when it comes to reading a room and normally takes jokes way too far. Prior to his big day, he sat down with Dave and said he shouldn't say anything bad in his wedding speech.
He made it crystal clear to Dave that he was not allowed to bring up his previous relationships or stories from their college party days. His wife was super sensitive about his ex when they began dating, as his ex was still in his core group of friends.
Dave was fully aware of his wife's sensitivity, and it seemed he understood the assignment when it came to giving the speech.
Dave's speech started out in an acceptable way, and his guests laughed. But then, things took a turn for the worse.
"He looked around, laughed into the microphone, and said he was genuinely surprised that I’d actually made it to the altar today, considering how many times I’d almost run back to my ex, though, in reality, he thought it would be funny, since I never wanted to go back to her," he explained.
"Before anyone even had a chance to process what he’d said, he added that everyone in our group thought my wife was, in essence, a 'backup plan' in case my ex moved to the other side of the country."
"The entire reception hall went dead silent. You could literally hear a pin drop. I turned to look at my wife, and her face had completely drained of color. She looked humiliated and was on the verge of crying right there at the head table in front of our families."

He felt overcome with rage, jumped up from his seat, and snatched the microphone right out of Dave's hand. He then whispered in Dave's ear that he had to leave ASAP.
Dave tried to downplay what he did and excused his behavior as banter. He picked up Dave's jacket off of his chair, steered him to the nearest exit, and dumped him as a friend before kicking him out of the venue.
Ever since then, some of their guy friends have been telling him that he made a scene and trashed an important friendship over a joke.
"My parents also think I should have swallowed my pride, let him finish, and talked to him privately the next day instead of kicking him out in front of eighty guests," he continued.
"My wife completely supports how I handled it and said she felt protected, but the backlash from my friends is making me second-guess if I handled the situation too harshly."
He's left wondering if he was wrong to kick Dave out and end their friendship.
What Dave did was humiliating and hurtful. He handled this in the best way, and he showed his wife that he's willing to step in and protect her, even if it's at the expense of a friendship.
It sounds like he needs to leave the rest of his friends behind, too, if they have an issue with him sticking up for his wife.
What do you think?
