Do you think it's a problem for a woman to get married and want to keep her maiden name? Or do you see nothing wrong with this?
Six months ago, this 32-year-old man proposed to his 31-year-old girlfriend after four years of dating. She's independent, successful, and the highlight of his life.
"She's had it for 31 years. Her career is built on it. She doesn’t see why she should change it," he explained.
Well, later on he filled his parents in on that, and it created one big mess. His mom and dad freaked out. His dad said his fiancée is being rude and disrespecting their family, while his mom sobbed and said people will assume something's deeply wrong with all of them.
His mom and dad are threatening to boycott his wedding unless his fiancée agrees to take his name. He's not sure what to do, because he thinks his mom and dad are acting wild.
Her fiancée is allowed to do what she wants with her last name, and it doesn't bother him in the least that she wants to stick to her maiden name.
However, he can't imagine getting married without his mom and dad there to witness his big day.
"My fiancée says she won’t change her mind just because they're threatening her. She says she loves me, but she won’t be controlled. I don’t blame her," he continued.

"Part of me wants to tell my parents to get over it and show up or don't. Another part worries I’ll regret it forever if they don’t come."
"Has anyone navigated a situation where parents threaten to skip the wedding over something like this? What did you do?"
Well, he and his fiancée have to do what's best for themselves without letting anyone influence that. He also can't control what his mom and dad decide to do.
This is not a cute situation to be in, but hopefully his mom and dad will calm down and get over it, because a name is not the end of the world.
What advice do you have for him?
