Three days before TikToker Carolyn (@carolyn_la_rose) and her fiancé were supposed to leave for Iceland for their wedding, her fiancé called the whole thing off. Throughout his life, her fiancé has been battling depression, and he had really been struggling for the past two years.
A couple of months ago, he was on a project for work. He makes video games, and the producer for the project was a challenge to work with. He hated being on the project, and it was making him miserable. He was relieved once he got off the project but was still unhappy.
"He has a lot of codependency issues, which I'm aware of," said Carolyn. "I just wasn't aware of the extent of them. And before anyone asks, we did do couples therapy. He's in therapy. I'm in therapy on my own for my CPTSD."
"I was not aware of how bad things were. I had to trust my partner's word, and he would always tell me that he was fine and everything was okay, and he was excited for the wedding."
So, when her fiancé called the wedding off, she was completely blindsided. She did not see it coming at all. A few days before he called off the wedding, he had been talking to her about stuff that was bothering him, and she told him that it seemed like it was time to seek more professional help.
The next day, they went out to celebrate their engagement and had a great time. They had a dinner reservation at one of their favorite restaurants.
A couple of days later, they were doing some chores together around the farm they lived on when he suddenly blurted out that he wasn't in the right state of mind to get married.
"He didn't feel like he was of right mind to stand up there and make me these promises when he feels like he's in such a negative space, and that was pretty jarring," said Carolyn.
"I mean, there's definitely a lot more to it, but that's just kind of the gist of things, and it really, really caught me off guard. I was really shocked that he called off the wedding."

They were planning to elope and have a micro wedding in Iceland with her parents, her best friend, and her fiancé's best friend. At first, she thought he was just calling off the wedding, and they would still go to Iceland because they had a two-week trip planned.
However, he didn't feel like he was up for the trip either, and he couldn't face her parents or friend after calling off the wedding. That was when the gravity of the situation truly hit her.
On one hand, Carolyn was proud of her fiancé for finally speaking up about his struggles, but on the other, she was so upset and felt like the rug was ripped out from underneath her.
It has been a little over two weeks since her fiancé called off the wedding, and she is now in the angry phase.
She feels guilty for being angry because she knows how hard it is to deal with depression. She is also angry at herself for allowing herself to get excited about the wedding.
"We're still together, and we're working through things, and we're getting him the help that he needs," said Carolyn. "It just sucks. And I know in the grand scheme of things, it's just a wedding, but I just don't really allow myself to get my hopes up and get excited about things because of everything I've been through, especially in relationships and dealing with men. So, I just feel foolish."
